I finally upgraded my mobile phone.
It got to the point that my apps weren’t being updated and stopped working.
I mean I was only 6 versions, oops now 7, behind the current version.
As part of that upgrade I lost the fingerprint unlocking and instead gained facial recognition.
It is certainly quicker and easier (once setup), but I’ve found a problem in today’s world.
If I’m walking around shops, where face masks are highly suggested (as they are no longer mandatory), then when I hold up my phone to unlock it – nothing happens.
I’ll admit it took me a few tries to twig the reason why it wasn’t working 😂
And it did then ask for my passcode to sign in.
However, I think that face masks – certainly in stores – is going to be with us for some time.
And this could be an annoyance going forward.
Will people be OK seeing others take off their mask – say in a queue to pay – to unlock their phone to get the app needed.
Will phone owners remember to remove their mask when they hold it up to unlock it?
Let’s be honest – so many companies are pushing their phone apps:
- get the app for points or special offers
- use the app to get discounts
- don’t forget to scan your app each time you buy from us
- pay from the app – it’s easier
Perhaps I need to change my settings so that it asks for the passcode as standard?
Maybe I should have gotten a phone that uses fingerprints to unlock the phone?
Maybe the phone makers need to think of how the world works today, not just how it has previously.
Note: We know that a lot of Asian countries have and still do wear masks as standard, so I wonder what they think of the facial recognition?
I like my phone, and honestly I’m unlikely to change it now that I’ve got it all setup.
However, improvements to technology aren’t always the great thing they are touted to be – especially when they don’t take into account today’s “new normal”.
